Yokohamas IR dream appears to be over with anti-IR campaigner and former Yokohama City University Professor Takeharu Yamanaka set to win Sundays mayoral election, based on exit surveys. The official count was due to begin from 9pm Japan time but Yamanaka was by that time already believed to hold an unassailable lead.

The 48-year-old, who had the official backing of the Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan and the support of the Japan Communist Party, has promised to end Yokohamas IR bid, having described casinos as a poison apple.
